vineman...delayed...
Stingray -> Foot -> Pain -> Hit Tendon -> Out one month of training -> No Vineman this year -> :(
you follow that? okay... so, no Vineman this year for me. But because I'm out for a month of hard training doesn't mean my life will end. I've decided I'll do Nautica instead.
Nora, any news from the doc about your shoulder?
UPDATE: Nevermind, Nautica is sold out...

Vineman Support
Hi All,
I am going to try to make it up there to cheer you all on during the race. I will find out in three weeks whether or not I need surgery and if I don't need surgery, I'll be there!!!
Maybe I should wear a Wanna be Vineman Support shirt =).
Have Fun!

TSHIRTS
Okay... 39 days to go and now it's time to think about what we're wearing for the race...
Marc and I talked and thought about doing tshirt/tank.
Here are your options:
For Girls:
On the shirt, it will say: "Wannabe's..."
We'll get all the same color...
Leave a comment on which one you like the best... and what color you you prefer. (It doesn't have to be any of the colors shown above).
You have till june 15 to decide.
ALSO, if you have anyone who is going to watch and wants a "Wannabe Crew" shirt... we'll be ordering Black shirts for them too... they have till June 30 to let us know what size they want. (shirts for them will be 10$ a piece)

Swim Clinics
Last weekend Kimmy and I did the Pacific Coast Tri Swim Clinic at Newport Beach. At first I thought we were crazy for attempting something like this but at the end I am really glad we did.
We learned a lot of valuable information such as how to breath, how to get in, out of the ocean water, and how to just swim in that type of conditions. They also did a timed swim for everyone and showed alot of info on transitions techniques. (I missed out on that stuff cause I was hunted down by a 10foot long sting ray who nearly killed me. Okay, not really but I did get stung and it did hurt like hell.)
Would I recommend this swim clinic to others? HELL YES! I am going back in mid July to finish up the clinic and also will be checking out the clinic before Triforlife.

Injuries
Hi All,
Some of you are aware that I was in a bicycling accident a week ago and unfortunately I broke my collar bone and fractured my T1 bone. The doctor said it will take about 6-8 weeks for the bones to heal and after that, I can start physical therapy. This means that I will not be able to race in the vineman. I can't tell you how difficult this is especially since I can't workout during the 6-8 weeks. I hope you all have a great time at the rice and I will see you at the next race =).
Train safely,
Nora

music to my bones?
While I was swimming on Saturday I noticed a man slicing through the water with a weird contraption on his head. I heard a slight rhymic vibration in the air and realized he had a mp3 player on!!! Fascinated by this, I took my time getting situated to start swimming and waiting for him to be done so I can bother him with a million and a half questions.
The new SwiMP3 v.2 underwater MP3 player is an incredible audio experience. Imagine listening to hours of your own music during your swim workout. The SwiMP3’s innovative sound transfer technology offers exception underwater sound quality. Standard players rely on the transmission of sound through air or water causing the swimmer to perceive only muffled noise. The SwiMP3 uses bone conduction – the direct transfer of sound vibrations from the cheek bone to the inner ear – to provide the swimmer with exceptional sound clarity. The SwiMP3 is fully waterproof and can be used with all the competitive swim strokes.
Weighs only 2 ounces. We have removed the back control console. Easily Clips onto any goggles, without taking your goggles apart. Now has 256 MB capacity for 4 hours of original music.
now, I want one!!!

Monthly Competition
Because this month is OWNED by the girls... i decided to bring up the thought of May's monthly friendly competition.
It will be dubbed... SwimMaster.
This will be an individual competition based on hours, not miles. Once a week, I will dubbed people who are in first and last place Big Fish, Little fish respectively.
You have from May 1- 31 to go out there and swim until you can breathe underwater!
now, go train!!!!

dissecting grades
So i was staring off into my Vineman Map of the Road Leg and wondering exactly how long and % of incline those to spikes were on the route. With my trusty calculator and a ruler here is what we are looking forward to:
Spike One: about 26.25 miles in, we'll be climbing 200 ft for 1.3 miles giving us a 4.37% grade.
Spike Two: Also known as CHALK HILL, start of climb is at 42.5 but is only a 50 foot climb (measly 1%). The real climbing begins at mile 43.75 and last about 1.23 miles with a grade of 6% grade (400ft climb).
my thoughts? i've climbed worse. Rosarito's "el tigre" is 7.5% grade. Kim... you know that last hill on day one at MS150, that was 3%!!!!!
so... there you go. the two "scariest" spikes on the route.
now... go train

BP MS 150 Houston to Austin
Two days of riding in a warm and humid climate doesn't always seem like the best choice on rides but when you are riding with friends and a great support system, it makes sense.
Day One
Stage 1
We started from the hotel. Nice and cool with a bit of fog. Flat.
Stage 2
We ended passing through the first rest stop and glided over the pavement at a easy 16+mph. No hills in sight.
Stage 3
Flying through the route...Sun is coming out.
Stage 4
Starting to find hills in the back country of Texas. TIME TO EAT!!!
Stage 5
Time work off those sandwiches and cookies! Lots of rolling hills from here to the end of the day.
Stage 6
More Hills...
Stage 7
Some of the hardest climbs of the day. Saw a few people get out of the saddle and walk up. I've seen worse. :P
Stage 8
Easist stage after lunch. Just a few hills but nothing to be scared about.
Stage 9
Road is a a bit bumpy. Starts out easy and into a few tiring hills at the end. Worth pushing through to get to camp!!! Finished a century!!!!!
Day Two
Stage 1
ChipSeal BITES! Six miles of this stuff. Lots of riders on the side of the road fixing flats. Reasonably flat but the ground will kill your wrists.
Stage 2
Easy rolling hills.
Stage 3
Second hardest stage of climbing. Long hills with lots of people getting off the saddle to walk. Coming into town for lunch you'll face a lot of traffic.
Stage 4
Easiest stage of the day. Shortest stage all weekend.
Stage 5
Easy long incline. Con of this stage is the wind.
Stage 6
Possible the hardest stage of the day. Not because it's the stage of riding but the hills are tiresome and there is a lot of traffic around you.

Bet Reminder
Some of you may know the bets going on for Vineman.
*Last one out of the water (slowest time) has to buy the first round of drinks (alcoholic or non).
*Anyone who DNF (did not finish) has to buy dinner for EVERYONE.
Well, there's another bet between two of us. Marc and Linda. Linda thinks she can beat Marc's swim time. Marc is scared and is attempting to sound confident she can't. What do they win? Bragging rights for the rest of their lives of who is the fastest swimmer.
Now, go train! In Kimmy's case... Start Saving :p

MS RIDE UPDATE...
Hi guys,
Just wanted to give you an update on how the training is going. If
you haven't heard yet, Kim and I are going to Texas to ride the BP MS 150 Bike
Tour to help raise money for multiple sclerosis. The ride starts in Houston and finishes up in Auston, a
total of 150. It is looking like a very enriching experience and
something that gives back to the community!
We're also trying to raise money by donations. Nothing big this time
around. My goal is 500$ and i'm a little under my halfway mark and
would love your support!
As far as my training is going, it's been a little slower than usual
but I think I'll be able to work up the miles to go the distance. My
longest ride this year has been 58 miles and have been riding everyday
to get my cycling legs back in form.
Again thanks for your support and helping people with this devastating
disease. It really does mean alot!!!
You can donate online at
LINDA: http://ms150.org/ms150/donate/donate.cfm?id=193904
KIM: http://ms150.org/ms150/donate/donate.cfm?id=193799
Thanks guys!!!

MARCH COMPETITION
Hi everyone...
So it's the first day of march and we decided to kick everyone's butt in gear and have a friendly competition.
You'll notice there is a new LIST on the side of the page called: MARCH MADNESS. Each of us has a line where we will be adding ALL MILES COMBINED to it. So if you swim one mile, ride 20, and run four, you will be up to 26 miles. So on top of putting your training info in the mileage tracker, please update your March Madness tracker too.
The winner will gain bragging rights (which is a big thing for all of us) about who says they train the hardest. Everyone starts on level ground this month. So... fire up those calves and cycle, run and swim your ass off!
Best of luck to all of you... Since I'm going to win!
UPDATE: also for the winner, they'll receive a one year subscription to OUTSIDE magazine. :)

Tour of California
Yesterday Bob and I went on the Mardi Gras Metric Century Ride. It is a phenomenal ride to use as a training ride for the Cycling portion of Vineman. In the midst of the ride, we stopped for a few hours to watch the Tour of California ride up their Second King of the Mountain (KOM) which was the same hill we had to climb. Needless to say, we snapped a photo of us on top.
Things I learned on this ride: From Santa Paula to Ventura, you cycling through a wind tunnel, every way you turn, you are riding in a wind tunnel. not. fun. Second, Ojai to Ventura is NOT, i repeat, is NOT all down hill. Nice rolling hills. Third but certainly the most important thing, I need to start cycling a hell of a lot more so next time I ride, I won't be that tired at the end. :P

In need of support
I am going to ride in the MS150 here in April, and I need your help!!
On April 21-22, 2007, I will join thousands
of cyclists for the BP MS 150 Bike Tour. This is a
two-day tour from Houston to Austin. The goal is to
raise money to help find the cure for multiple
sclerosis. Last year, more than 12,000 cyclists
raised $11.4 million. This year, our goal is
to raise $11.5 million dollars and my personal goal is
$500.00.
Please help support me in this personal endeavor and,
in turn, help people with this devastating disease.
You can donate online at
http://ms150.org/ms150/donate/donate.cfm?id=193904
Thanks again for all your help!!!

Great Race of Agoura
Hi Guys, I don't know how many of you are running the Great Race of Agoura but when you register, if you wouldn't mind, could you put down the name of my friend's kids' school--Sumac Elementary. This event is a fund-raised for the local elementary schools. Thanks in advance.

Best Western Garden Inn
Hi Everyone,
I just called Best Western and they are completely sold out for the weekend of July 21st. The lady was kind enough to recommend another hotel to me (Quality Inn) and it's cheaper! Mention my name (Nora Varbedian) when you make a reservation so that they put us close together. They accept AAA discount for those of you who have AAA.

TGIF...
A Bicycle Story
A triathlete was walking around in town one day when his friend, another triathlete, rode up on an incredible shiny new bike.
The first chap was stunned and asked, "Where did you get such a fantastic bike?"
The friend replied, "Well, yesterday I was out running in the forest just minding my own business when this beautiful woman rode up to
me on this bike. She threw the bike to the ground, took off all her clothes and said, "Take what you want!"
The first chap nodded approvingly, "Good choice. The clothes probably wouldn't have fitted you anyway."
as of today, you have 177 days to train!

It's Okay to Run Hurt
NEW ADVICE Dr. James Weinstein says rest is counterproductive.
By GINA KOLATA
SOURCE
By GINA KOLATA
JUST before the end of last year, a prominent orthopedic surgeon was stretching to lift a heavy box and twisted his back. The pain was agonizing. He could not sit, and when he lay down he could barely get up.
So the surgeon, Dr. James Weinstein of Dartmouth College, decided to go out for a run.
“I took an anti-inflammatory, iced up, and off I went,” Dr. Weinstein recalled. When he returned, he said, he felt “pretty good.”
It sounds almost like heresy. The usual advice in treating injuries is to rest until the pain goes away. But Dr. Weinstein and a number of leading sports medicine specialists say that is outdated and counterproductive. In fact, Dr. Weinstein says, when active people consult him, he usually tells them to keep exercising.
The idea, these orthopedists and exercise specialists say, is to use common sense. If you’ve got tendinitis or sprained a muscle or tendon by doing too much, don’t go right back to exercising at the same level....READ MORE

BETS
Some of you may know the bets going on for Vineman.
*Last one out of the water (slowest time) has to buy the first round of drinks (alcoholic or non).
*Anyone who DNF (did not finish) has to buy dinner for EVERYONE.
Well, there's another bet between two of us. Marc and Linda. Linda thinks she can beat Marc's swim time. Marc is scared and is attempting to sound confident she can't. What do they win? Bragging rights for the rest of their lives of who is the fastest swimmer.
Now, go train!

update from bob
So, we have another quiet person on the board. Bob. I called him last night to see if he has been supertraining and apparently he has.
Just hasn't touched a pool yet.
Apparently his family is stealing all the internet time to post anything.
UPDATE: oh wait... just noticing the Tracker 2007... he has updated it and is SCHOOLING everyone.
MARC... GO POST...
there it is.

Cement blocks...
I was told i need to post more... So, here I am... beat. My legs feel like cement blocks were tied to them. Why you make ask they feel that way? It's called deciding to do a swim workout with only my legs and running to and from the gym... 3.3 miles to be exact... i totally forgot what swimming does to legs.
one word to describe me at this very moment: pooped.
now to think I only swam .75 miles... and only 3.3 miles... I guess that's good for the time being... but VINEMAN will want more out of my body. Good thing I finally stepped up and started the supertraining.
Carry on...
